10/25 Harvest - Indiana Carrots and Alfalfa Sprouts

These are the last of my Indiana carrots.  Due to their super slow growth and my impatience, it's been about two months since I pulled all the carrots in my square foot gardening beds except for one square foot, and these came from the last square foot.  These carrots have grown more in the last two months, but they are still pretty small compared to my California carrots - all the carrots you see here added up to 11.2 oz, and the biggest carrot from my last California harvest weighed 13 oz all by itself.  Oh well, I'm not complaining too much, though, because something is better than nothing!

I also got my first sprout harvest using the 3-Tray Kitchen Sprouter that I recently won in a giveaway on the Cheap Vegetable Gardener's blog.  This sprouter was pretty easy to use, and I got about 2-3 cups of organic alfalfa sprouts from the first test drive.  Keith and I enjoyed our first taste of these home-grown sprouts on our sandwiches this weekend.

Apparently there are lots of different kinds of seeds that you can buy online to grow different types and flavors of sprouts, including sprouts from seeds that I hadn't thought of like broccoli, kale and mustard.  I'm excited to try some new and interesting sprouts besides the typical alfalfa.  If any experienced sprouters have any suggestions or recommendations, please let me know!

You can also sprout wheat and make manna or essene bread. This is a very healthy way to eat wheat, as sprouting makes it more nutritious.

The carrots look great to me! They're nice and fat...

Your carrots look wonderful. I neglected to water my fall carrots during the dry spell and I have none!

My husband "The Italian" sprouts mung beans in a canning jar in the frig.

The carrots definitely got larger! Mine were stubby like that too. Although I'm hoping for a better harvest this coming year now that we built raised beds. Oooh, love alfalfa on sandwiches. Yum.

Mary - thanks for the tip about sprouting wheat! I am not familiar with manna or essene bread, but I will google it.

EG - thank you. I guess I just got spoiled after seeing the CA carrots. Now that I know their full potential, it seems like anything less just won't do! :)

Robin - thank you! I ended up pulling all my fall carrots this weekend (this harvest was part of my spring carrots) because I needed to clear out the old SFG beds to make way for the new raised beds. In the last almost three months, my fall carrots grew to the size of toothpicks.

Mung beans, hmm, I would be interested in trying that myself as well. In the frig, though? I thought all sprouting happened in room temperature, but your husband might know something I don't.

meemsnyc - I hope we can both grow better carrots in our new raised beds next year!

Try sprouting daikon radish seeds. They've got a nice peppery taste.

I tend to let stuff sprout in daylight, but if you do them in the dark they end up blanches, which looks good with mung beans!

The sprouts look great! The carrots look like a variety that are bred to stay short and squat.

I get something at the health food store called "Zesty Sprouting Mix". It's a blend of clover, fenugreek and radish. I sometimes add some arugula and onion seed to it. Pure radish seed makes for a tangy/hot sprout as well.

Good luck with your sprouting!

Lovely looking carrots and surely a great taste!

We tried sprouting dark red radish last year. Very nice and spicy taste and a wonderful red colour too!

Have a great week,
Charlotta

Yes, a carrot is better than no carrots! So much better than from the store!

I know nothing about sprouting things but am very impressed! Did you get a bigger kitchen yet?

TIG - I do have some daikon radish seeds left, but probably not enough to get a whole lot of sprouts. Sprouting in the dark, hmm, there's an interesting thought!

kitsapFG - this carrot variety is called Short 'n Sweet. The name seems fitting for my Indiana carrots, but the ones I grew in CA are the exact same type (from the same seed envelope, even) and they seem to grow about 10 times bigger over there!

TYRA - thank you!

villager - I've been eyeing a few different seed mixes online, too. It seems like onions seeds would sprout much slower than the rest, so I don't know how harvesting would go if I'm sprouting them all together.

Madame C - thank you, and you have a great week, too!

The Apple Pie Gal - no bigger kitchen over here yet, but I'm slowly filling up the current small one with little appliances and knick-knacks like this sprouter. :) I would love to be able to move to a new house with a bigger kitchen, but now that I'm building new raised beds in the garden, I'm afraid I can't really think about moving elsewhere to start all over again!

Cool looking sprouts! The only sprouting I have tried is bean sprouts, they are so good when fresh.

snow pea sprouts are an absolute treat too, but the alfalfa are just so yummy! Good harvesting

We do our own mung bean sprouts (we actually did a large batch this past week but forgot to mention it on our blog...). We just buy the dried beans out of the bulk bin at our local co-op or Whole Foods (since we know they're not treated with anything from these sources) and sprout them in a simple homemade system we devised. Buying them in a seed packet costs about 8 times as much as the bulk bin and they always sprout.

Your alfalfa sprouts look good. I've never done them before...

I hope to be sprouting mung beans this winter. I found an Indian grocery that sells the beans so that ought to work.
